Food Allergies in Infants and Babies
By Lucky Balaraman
Is your baby susceptible to bouts of unexplained itchiness that you thought were merely a phase or skin sensitivity? Is her nose sometimes stuffy or runny? Is she cranky for no apparent reason and is she trying to tell you something?
Is emitting large quantities of intestinal gas a regular affair for your infant? Is his tummy a little more bloated than other kids’ and does he struggle to pass even soft stool or diarrhea?
If the answer is ‘”yes” to most of these questions, read on. Your baby might be dealing with a food allergy.
First of all, don’t panic. It’s not as serious as it sounds. Food allergies are a common problem amongst babies and adults alike.
There are many possible reasons for food allergies. Your infant could be allergic to cow’s milk or your child could be having some problems dealing with solids when you’re trying to wean him/her. Here are some possible causes for food allergies:
· Introduction of allergenic solids in baby’s diet before four months of age
· Allergy towards cow’s milk
· Allergy towards other foods like dairy products, fish, nuts, or wheat
· Heredity
· Enzyme deficiency which causes lactose intolerance
· In rare cases, a serious undetected illness or condition
Although food allergies in most cases are merely a nuisance and not life-threatening, parents still need to know the type of food or food group to eliminate from their baby’s diet. By avoiding, rotating the diet and playing food detective, we can minimize the discomfort and symptoms of food allergies as much as possible.
First, try to eliminate the following products from your infant’s diet.
· Dairy products
· Soy
· Egg (or at least white of egg)
· Wheat
· Peanuts
· Tree nuts
· Citrus fruits
· All types of food additives (reduce introduction of canned, packaged or ready-to-eat food)v · Shellfish
If you’re not sure whether your baby is indeed suffering from a food allergy, observe your baby very closely and monitor his/her diet to see if she is experiencing any of the following allergic reactions:
· Rashes on face or other body parts that are red and scaly
· Hives
· Swollen hands and feet, puffy eyes
· Dark circles under the eyes
· Throat soreness and tongue
· Sneezing, running or stuffy nose
· Wheezing
· Persistent cough
· Ear infection
· Red and scaly rashes around the anus
· Abdominal discomfort
· Diarrhea or soft stool
· Poor weight gain
· Bloating of the stomach
· Gassiness
· Fatigue, headaches
· Irritability, moodiness, hyperactivity
· Sore muscles and joints
If you’ve determined that your infant is, indeed, suffering from a food allergy, try substituting some of the allergenic foods with non-allergenic foods like apples, apricots, barley, beets, grapes, cranberries, mangoes and oats.
Other non-allergenic foods include asparagus, carrots, cauliflower, chicken, broccoli, lettuce, rice, safflower oil, salmon, sweet potatoes, rye and honey.
Food allergies, as mentioned earlier, are quite common among infants and can be dealt with easily. The most important thing is for us to detect them, minimize reaction and symptoms, get advice from a professional and eliminate the allergies’ immediate causes.
When it comes to baby care, one thing you don’t want to be is out of date. Insure yourself against obsolescence: read Magnificent Babies Magazine, edited by Lucky Balaraman, at http://magnificentbabies.com.

Dairy Truth
Say NO WAY! to WHEY!
Tuesday August 22nd 2006, 6:51 am

courtesy of Robert Cohen
After fat and casein are removed from milk, dairy processors are left with whey protein. Whey is composed of bovine blood proteins. Serum albumen. Lactalbumen. Dead white blood cells. Hormonal residues including estrogen and progesterone.
The body’s reaction to a foreign protein is to destroy that antigen-like invader with an antibody. For those individuals unfortunate enough to possess a genetic pre-disposition to such an event, the antibody then turns upon one’s own cells. That is what is known as an auto-immune response.
In the case of diabetes and Multiple Sclerosis (MS), the body’s response to whey proteins is to attack the outer membrane protecting nerve cells, or the myelin sheath.
It has long been established that early exposure to bovine proteins is a trigger for insulin dependent diabetes mellitus. Researchers have made that same milk consumption connection to MS. The July 30, 1992 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine first reported the diabetes autoimmune response milk connection:
“Patients with insulin dependent diabetes mellitus produce antibodies to cow milk proteins that participate in the development of islet dysfunction… Taken as a whole, our findings suggest that an active response in patients with IDDM (to the bovine protein) is a feature of the auto-immune response.”
On December 14, 1996, The Lancet revealed:
“Cow’s milk proteins are unique in one respect: in industrialized countries they are the first foreign proteins entering the infant gut, since most formulations for babies are cow milk-based. The first pilot stage of our IDD prevention study found that oral exposure to dairy milk proteins in infancy resulted in both cellular and immune response…this suggests the possible importance of the gut immune system to the pathogenesis of IDD.”
THE MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS/MILK CONNECTION
The April 1, 2001 issue of the Journal of Immunology contained a study linking MS to milk consumption.
Michael Dosch, M.D., and his team of researchers determined that multiple sclerosis and type I (juvenile) diabetes mellitus are far more closely linked than previously thought. Dosch attributes exposure to cow milk protein as a risk factor in the development of both diseases for people who are genetically susceptible. According to Dosch:
“We found that immunologically, type I diabetes and multiple sclerosis are almost the same - in a test tube you can barely tell the two diseases apart. We found that the autoimmunity was not specific to the organ system affected by the disease. Previously it was thought that in MS autoimmunity would develop in the central nervous system, and in diabetes it would only be found in the pancreas. We found that both tissues are targeted in each disease.”
MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS
Multiple sclerosis affects approximately 300,000 Americans. Two-thirds of those diagnosed with MS are women. Most researchers believe that MS is an autoimmune disease. Auto means “self.”
WHO DOES NOT GET MS?
It is interesting to note that Eskimos and Bantus (50 million individuals living in East Africa) rarely get MS. Neither do those native North and South American Indian or Asian populations who consume no cow’s milk or dairy products.
WHO GETS MS?
The British medical journal Lancet reported that dairy-rich diets filled have been closely linked to the development of MS. (The Lancet 1974;2:1061)
A study published in the journal Neuroepidemiology revealed an association between eating dairy foods and an increased prevalence of MS. (Neuroepidemiology 1992;11:304Â12.)
MS researcher, Luther Lindner, M.D., a pathologist at Texas A & M University College of Medicine, wrote:
“It might be prudent to limit the intake of milk and milk products.”
Women are targeted by dairy industry scare tactics that offer misinformation regarding osteoporosis. Two-thirds of MS victims are women. As milk and cheese consumption increase along population lines, so too does an epidemic number of MS cases. The numbers add up. The clues add up. The science supports epidemiological studies.
Got diabetes? Got MS? The milk connection has been established.
Whey protein? Say no way!

Natural way to prevent and aid in Depression and Anxiety
This is what I take everyday but always consult with your Integrative Holistic Doctor or Integrative psychiatrist..
1 a day EPA 400 and DHA 200
1 a day trader joes B-6-2mg/Folic Acid- 200mg /B12- 1,000 mg
1 a night 5-HTP 50mg
In any given year, nearly 20 million adults in the United States have depression. Most people with depression do not seek treatment, although the majority can be helped with treatment. The first step is to talk with your doctor, because depression is a serious illness that shouldn't be self-treated.
Folic Acid
Folic acid, also called folate, is a B vitamin that is often deficient in people who are depressed.
Folate is found in green leafy vegetables, other vegetables, fruit, beans, and fortified grains. It's one of the most common vitamin deficiencies because of poor diet but also because chronic conditions and various medications such as aspirin and birth control pills can also lead to deficiency.
Besides food, folic acid is also available as a supplement or as part of a B-complex vitamin.
Researchers at Harvard University have found that depressed people with low folate levels don't respond as well to antidepressents, and taking folic acid in supplement form can improve the effectiveness of antidepressants. For more information, read Low Folate and Vitamin B12 Linked to Depression.
Omega-3 fatty acids
Omega-3 fatty acids are a type of good fat needed for normal brain function. Our bodies can't make omega-3s on their own, so we must obtain them through our diet.
Studies have linked depression with low dietary intake of omega-3 fatty acids. In countries with higher fish consumption, such as Japan and Taiwan, the depression rate is 10 times lower than in North American. Postpartum depression is also less common, active components for depression are EPA and DHA

5-HTP
5-HTP is short for 5-hydroxytryptophan. It's produced naturally in the body and is used to make the neurotransmitter serotonin. Although taking 5-HTP in supplement form may theoretically boost the body's serotonin levels, many experts feel there is not enough evidence to determine the safety of 5-HTP. It should not be combined with antidepressants unless you get your doctors approval.
Diet
•Reduce your intake of sweets
Sweets temporarily make you feel good as blood sugar levels soar, but may worsen mood later on when they plummet.
•Avoid caffeine and alcohol
Caffeine and alcohol both dampen mood. Alcohol temporarily relaxes us and caffeine boosts energy, but the effects of both are short-lived. Both can worsen mood swings, anxiety, depression, and insomnia.

The Story Behind Cosmetics
This is a tough one cause, it's really hard to find a all natural product that works for HDTV.
I have fav makeup companies like smashbox, Lancome, too faced, makeup forever, MAC and i know that they are all trying to go more natural with having mineral makeups..
I think skin care needs to be more natural, it all depends on the size of the molecules as to how far into the skin it is absorbed…so creams that are created to hydrate the skin (that are designed to be absorbed and penetrate skin easily) will be much easier to absorb than a slice of raw carrot!

LOS ANGELES -- To organic farmers, Kenneth Noel Nelson Jr. was the man with the golden manure: It was rich with Mother Nature's finest waste, robust for the soil and cheap in price.
But to federal prosecutors in California, Nelson's organic fertilizer empire had developed a stench.
On Thursday a federal grand jury indicted Nelson on 28 counts of mail fraud in connection with an alleged years-long scheme to dupe farmers and agriculture product distributors. The indictment accused Nelson, 57, of selling premium-priced liquid fertilizer touted as made from all-natural products such as fish meal and bird guano that instead was spiked with far cheaper synthetic chemicals.
The scheme, according to the federal indictment, enabled Nelson to become the largest purveyor of organic fertilizer to farmers in the western half of the U.S. and pull in at least $9 million in sales from 2003 to 2009.
This is the second indictment of an organic fertilizer producer in California in the last five months. It also has fueled fears among some farmers about possible contamination of their pristine fields and has raised questions about whether consumers bought produce that was billed as organic but may not have met federal organic requirements. Many consumers who opt to pay a premium for organic goods do so because they don't want pesticides and synthetic chemicals to be used in the production of their food.
Neither Nelson nor his attorney could be reached for comment Thursday. An arrest warrant has been issued for Nelson. Prosecutors with the Justice Department office in Sacramento said they expected Nelson to surrender to authorities soon.
The indictment is part of a growing effort by the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Office of the Inspector General to crack down on fraud and corruption in the organic industry - a segment of the food sector that has grown to more than $24 billion in the U.S. and has emerged as a lucrative business in the Golden State.
The agency has seven open investigations involving the federal National Organic Program, officials said.
In the Nelson case, the allegations highlight an industry whose regulatory system has relied heavily on trust. Those who don't follow the rules, prosecutors allege, have reaped plenty: Among other things, prosecutors are seeking the forfeiture of Nelson's 2006 Chevrolet Silverado, 2005 Mini Cooper, 2004 Porsche Cayenne and 2003 BMW 330.
"The motive in these types of cases is economic," U.S. Attorney Benjamin B. Wagner said. "Consumers pay a premium for organic products, and they should not be misled."
In the tight-knit world of organic farming, Nelson and his company, Port Organic Products Ltd., were well-known. He owned several ventures to sell fertilizer to the green-farming community, including Kern County-based AgroMar Inc., Sail-On Ag Products Inc., Desert Organic Express Inc., Action Fertilizer and Microbial Assisted Soil Health Inc.
The federal National Organic Program was established in 1990 to regulate the organic agriculture industry and make sure that the fruits, vegetables and other edible products being sold as organic were produced in a way that met certain standards.
The government requires that farmers not put any synthetic chemicals on their land for three years before harvesting - and selling - an organic crop. According to Justice Department officials, federal law also states that, with limited exceptions, organic crop producers cannot use fertilizers with synthetic ingredients such as aqua ammonia or ammonium sulfite to infuse nitrogen into the soil.
If farmers used such chemical fertilizer, they could lose their organic certification.

Food Inc
In Food, Inc., filmmaker Robert Kenner lifts the veil on our nation's food industry, exposing the highly mechanized underbelly that has been hidden from the American consumer with the consent of our government's regulatory agencies, USDA and FDA. Our nation's food supply is now controlled by a handful of corporations that often put profit ahead of consumer health, the livelihood of the American farmer, the safety of workers and our own environment. We have bigger-breasted chickens, the perfect pork chop, herbicide-resistant soybean seeds, even tomatoes that won't go bad, but we also have new strains of E. coli—the harmful bacteria that causes illness for an estimated 73,000 Americans annually. We are riddled with widespread obesity, particularly among children, and an epidemic level of diabetes among adults.

Also, u can reuse the glass bottle and carry it with u, fill it with ur tap water : )
